Food companies will take any shred of evidence that something might be healthier to make a label out of to sell more. It's like popcorn all of a sudden being labeled gluten-free as if it hasn't been gluten-free for it's entire existence.

Dietary science is always a moving target. It's tough to do these big population studies and people tend to lie about their diets. There's also the whole "lobbying by industry groups to influence government policy" bit.

I had an endocrinologist who was concerned about my cholesterol. He gave me the list of banned foods, no eggs, etc. I read the modern research and ended up just going low carb, lost like 20 pounds. I think I was eating two dozen eggs a week. Cholesterol dropped like a stone, now my HDL to LDL ratio is awesome. Dietary cholesterol has almost no influence on blood cholesterol, it's mostly genetics and being overweight. Carbs are worse than dietary cholesterol, if anything.

I loved the "low carb!" trend a decade ago. You'd see stuff like pork crackling being advertised as health foods. happy.gif

Truly believe the biggest determinant in cholesterol is genetic.

At the Texas Speech and Communication convention in San Antonio where....

Today's presentation was just on food deserts, real-life stories of students in turmoil.

Haven't food deserts been proven to be made up?

There are areas of decreased access but the "desert" thing is just loaded language and it's very effective in convincing the willing. Here's a NBER abstract showing access is not the issue: http://www.nber.org/papers/w21126 If you do some Google-Foo you'll find more info where governments have spend hundreds of millions to get big retail groceries to open in bad neighborhoods and the data shows people buy what people buy.

What does a non-vegetarian bakery have? Meat flavored bread, I hope.

If only. They loudly proclaim how they don't use eggs, milk or butter. Of course everything is gluten free, non-GMO and not tested on animals. People always look very sad in there.

That sounds more vegan.  Also, how does one test things like flour on animals?

It means that it all tastes so bad that they wouldn't even feed it to animals.
