This face is so appropriate.

edit: I also took like 190 credits of math and science, so it's possible that I wasn't exposed to all the offering in the humanities departments. Heh.
I was required to take a socialogy course as a gen Ed requirement. I happened to be the only white student in the class and the teacher was black. It was a lot of fun having a teacher look right at me and tell me how me and my racist ancestors are a plague on society.

This is in a basic composition class too. Not sure why we always have controversial topics for a freshman level class that's just supposed to teach us the basics of how to write an essay.

You paid for this.

Glaciers are key icons of climate change and global environmental change. However, the relationships among gender, science, and glaciers – particularly related to epistemological questions about the production of glaciological knowledge – remain understudied. This paper thus proposes a feminist glaciology framework with four key components: 1) knowledge producers; (2) gendered science and knowledge; (3) systems of scientific domination; and (4) alternative representations of glaciers. Merging feminist postcolonial science studies and feminist political ecology, the feminist glaciology framework generates robust analysis of gender, power, and epistemologies in dynamic social-ecological systems, thereby leading to more just and equitable science and human-ice interactions.

Are there pictures of M(ichelle) Jackson and Jaclyn out there somewhere? Wondering whether Mark and Allessandro are just hoping to get lucky during the writing of Section 3.

Oh, and this seems appropriate:

Apparently that's the #2 geology journal to boot.

This is what happens when people in the humanities need grant money. "Science."

Of course it's the #2 journal. No top-rated science journal publishes articles by girls.

You ever see this story?

http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2015/05/plos-one-ousts-reviewer-editor-after-sexist-peer-review-storm

A reviewer noted that the paper would be stronger if they added a male coauthor. Shits were flipped.

Ha, no surprise. That's a pretty moronic comment by the reviewer.

And no, I hadn't seen it - thanks.

I almost understand where the guy was coming from. It was a story about gender bias, so he's postulating that having a male coauthor would be a guarantee that they didn't build any of their own bias in there. But...it's his job as a reviewer to actually demonstrate if there was any effects of bias. If there weren't any, he doesn't really have any grounds to complain. He's just assuming that an all female paper, about gender issues, has to be biased. Which is...bad.

But do you think that an all male paper on gender bias (especially one that concluded there was no gender bias) would get the same consideration? I wonder if there are any examples.

Depends on the field, I'd imagine. In some female dominated social science, maybe.

In biology, like that paper? Men are the default, so even female reviewers aren't going to presuppose bias without actually seeing some first.
