I think the Lena Dunham controversy is when she compared her Jewish Boyfriend to a dog.

The Azealia Banks one is because she hates white people from the Midwest.

I never heard of Lena Dunham before but I was watching Scandal with my daughter and she told me one of the characters was played by her. I don't understand how she can even have a boyfriend, even if he really is a dog, as she doesn't look like someone who leaves anything over for table scraps.

I had seen the article in the NYer but I din't know she was famous and after a few sentences I thought it was stupid and turned the page. Since this kerfuffle, I assume the boyfriend has left and she's eaten the dog.

I know who Dunham is mostly because I'm just a shade older than the target demographic for her show, so she pops up on my Facebook and such from time to time. I know little about her except that she seems terrible. And Nil is right - she wrote a "Dog or Jewish Boyfriend Quiz" in The New Yorker.

Banks, about whom I know nothing more than can be gleaned from a cursory Google search, said in an interview:
Quote:
I hate everything about this country. Like, I hate fat white Americans. All the people who are crunched into the middle of America, the real fat and meat of America, are these racist conservative white people who live on their farms. Those little teenage girls who work at Kmart and have a racist grandma -- that's really America.

I mean... I hate those people too...

Here's how this works.

First there's some sort of ordinal system for personal attributes. Gender, race, SES, political views. In this system female > male, black > white, gay > het, and of course left > right. Same thing with the topic at hand, namely the view most towards the left/right side of history, wins.

So then you compare the speaker's attributes to the group the speaker is attacking. If the speaker's attributes are greater than those being attacked, pass. If less than, price to pay. If equal, the subject content determines.

So for a recent case of subject content determining we have D&G vs. Elton John.

As to the two females under discussion their attributes clearly are greater than whom they are attacking so pass.

For the record, I don't care that they said these things, and I'm certain neither cares that their words will not influence the fact that I will continue to be completely uninterested in their art. However, I think it warrants asking whether or not their station in life has given them the ability to say things that would cost other people their careers, and, if so, what that says about the popular conception of privilege.

The comments from Banks are sort of funny if you apply reality to them. I mean, what percent of the US population lives on farms? Two percent? Also, some of those are bound to be black. So the thought that "the middle of America" is populated by fat white people living on farms" is patently ludicrous.

Azalea banks lost the little respect I had when she felt she had to protect hip hop and prevent cultural appropriation by kendrick lamar and erykah badu

Don't inject reality in these conversations. You'll spoil the messaging.

America really would be great if it was just LA/SF/NY. The world would be a better place too.

The impression I have of Dunham is that she's a generic crude female comedian who's notable for being particularly shameless notwithstanding that she's repulsive to look at. She's also an outspoken liberal. How'd I do?

I will forever remember her as the person that made the youtube telling about giving her virginity to Obama and trying to convince other women they should too.

I watched two episodes of Girls and thought they both sucked. Never repeated again. I wonder if I would care more about what Lena Dunham says if she actually made a good show (answer key: no)

Yeah, that was so lame. The only reason she did that was so 20 years from now she will have something to point at, and show the world how provocative, and cool she thinks she was even back then. What a cunt.

I will not link to it, because you will hate me, but those of you who hate yourselves can look at the SNL skit from when Dunham hosted. There is a film short where she is cast as Eve in the Garden of Eden Story. She is nude. They pixelated as much as they could but you can tell the safety department had run out and there simply weren't enough pixels left to do an adequate job.
