So, on privilege. In the last week or so, two liberal women whose job it is to entertain (Lena Dunham and Azealia Banks) have made some pretty gross statements related to religion, ethnicity, and race. Dunham's work was mostly just a poorly-executed attempt at humor, but Banks' words were flat-out racist and hateful.
Aside from a few murmurs about the statements, both women have pretty well been given a pass. Unlike similar gaffes by people who have some obvious differences from them, Ms. Dunham's and Ms. Banks' careers have not been damaged in the manner we've seen when other people have exhibited racist behavior.
Is the ability to be racist with impunity a manifestation of female liberal privilege?
