"It was meant to be funny" - This shows such a lack of understanding. I teach sociology and I use a lot of humor to illustrate ideologies and social structure. As I tell my students, humor is actually a pretty sophisticated concept - you have to be literate in the cultural structures underpinning the humor to get it. You can't be in on the joke if you aren't in on all the assumptions that go into it. Clearly they need to ask the question my students soon learn to groan when they hear -- "why is it funny?" When you start to pick apart and understand humor you see that most humor either comments upon closely held ideologies, stereotypes and social norms or it perpetuates them. This falls into the latter, and they are willfully ignoring that.
