We are fucked as a country.

That said, when even The New York Times takes a slightly bemused look at your movement... you're just the victim of another oppressive entity.

Nice find, Edina; you did not phail.

I have to laugh at "academics fuming" over this as it's a pretty foreseeable outcome of where so many leaders in the academy have been directing people for decades. I guess it's just one of those things where the folks aiming it at other people are getting upset their own weapons are now getting aimed at them...sort of like that folks saying they always figured it would be someone else paying more for insurance due to Obamacare.

I came here to post this. One of my most liberal friends actually posted this story the morning saying that we are raising a soft generation for hard days ahead.

And I agree with the rest of our post.

I like how the article closes with a professor claiming that a student could complain, initiating a "tortuous" process.

I wonder if the speaker said "torturous" but the word was edited so as not to necessitate a trigger warning.

You know, I'd feel bad for these people but this is just a reaction to the fucking conservative who for decades have wanted Parental Warnings on rap albums and "safe harbor" for TV and radio, and try to outlaw porn, and tried to ban Tropic of Cancer, and all their "what about the children?!?!?" nonsense.

Fuck all these people. Mind your own fucking business, cunt. The chickens have come home to roost, ya'll. Maybe you fucking statists will finally realize that the simple fact is the government* simply can't be trusted to enforce public morals or censorship of ANY kind. It'll swing back around the other way in 20 years and you'll have all these hetero-non-normatives claiming they're being persecuted again. Well, you've earned it, fuckface.

*I realize this is higher education and not the government in this story, but it's an increasing part of public life and there is no doubt this stupidity will spread to the government next. Hell, there was just a commercial I saw last week with Obama pleading with men not to rape women. We're not that far off.

Edit - BTW, I just coined that term "hetero-non-normative." I'm going to go post that on DU to see how they feel about it.

Go look at Gore in the '80s. He was a democrat in Tennessee at the time (this was before the beard and his new found environmental religion following his loss to Bush). He was pro-2nd amendment and pro-life. Hardly the makings of a neo-liberal.

I didn't mean to imply anything about party affiliation, just mental attitudes. Gore was certainly a conservative back then, and were it not for his crazy environmental nonsense which nets him millions of dollars a year he'd still be classified as one.

As for Tipper -

EDIT - It's from wikipedia, so for what it's worth -
Quote:
During his time in Congress, Gore was considered a "moderate" (he referred to himself as a "raging moderate")[45] opposing federal funding of abortion, voting in favor of a bill which supported a moment in silence in schools, and voting against a ban on interstate sales of guns.[46] In 1981, Gore was quoted as saying with regard to homosexuality, "I think it is wrong," and "I don't pretend to understand it, but it is not just another normal optional life style." In his 1984 Senate race, Gore said when discussing homosexuality, "I do not believe it is simply an acceptable alternative that society should affirm." He also said that he would not take campaign funds from gay rights groups.[47] His position as a moderate (and on policies related to that label) shifted later in life after he became Vice President and ran for president in 2000.[48]

In 1991, Gore was one of ten Democrats who supported the Gulf War.[32]

When she says "all people deserve the right to live their lives free of stigma and structural oppression" does she mean "society's" structural oppression, or literally the structure of buildings are oppressing us with narrow doors and stairs?
