In your case, I'd just go to Joseph A. Bank and get a cheap black suit with lots of shoulder padding (not one of the new slim-cut styles). Be sure to take advantage of one of their innumerable sales. That should leave you with plenty left on your budget for the other stuff. I'd suggest white shirt, black necktie, dark gray fedora, corrected grain shoes.

I know this will look very stereotypical, very "central casting," but I get a sense that this is what is wanted. A black or very dark gray suit with white pinstriping might also work, but, again, this might be overdoing it.

I suggest you look at resident member Tibor, who sparked quite the debate wearing an outfit as described. I also will forewarn you that getting all of those items from "quality" houses for under $1000 is unrealistic without compromising. It's also unnecessary, in my opinion, considering they will likely be worn only for your play and not as part of your regular wardrobe.
Shots fired!!!!

**** that. Have fun with it. Go theatrical over accuracy. It's what people want to see (and it seems like it's what you want to do)

If you don't already have a black suit, use this as an excuse to get one. They aren't very versatile, but you'll be sure to wear it at some point (only two things are sure in life, and one of them isn't taxes).

I would go with JLibourel's advice, apart from switching the colors of the shirt and tie. Maybe go self stripes on the black suit.

maifia boss vs hitman are different things
I still have a few old school made guys.
and yes
they look like they stepped out of central casting.
one guy who is presently "upstate" had Brioni make matching topcoats to go with each suit.
I made long straight point collars that overlocked!

Did you ever make a "goodfellas" collar?

i have never made the collar shown in goodfellas.
i have made very close point shirts that overlock, but never one where the tie knot is covered.

I have made shirts for "made" guys. they do not wear the goodfellas collar

OP, this might be helpful. Just don't get "whacked" / "sent Upstate" / "sent to sleep with the fishes"
