Hi Gents!

I'm headed to Japan for a couple of weeks and I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the Ring Jacket tailoring programme? I know there are several levels (some of which are only available in Osaka) but I'd be leaning more towards the MTM since I won't be around long enough for a basted fitting in between. Any details on experiences would be great!

thanks

I have a MTM jacket from them that I really like. I was measured by Mr. Sasamoto in SF when he was in town with Khakis of Carmel...should be pictures in here somewhere. I had a personal pattern created, but if the RTW sizes fit you well, they will just make minor adjustments and it will be much cheaper than what I did.

Ring Offers RTW and MTM. The MTM is a variation of the RTW allowing basic adjustments and fabric selection. At trunk shows at The Armoury and Khakis Carmel, they offer MTM and Mr Sasamoto is on hand to measure and can offer another level of extra detail called Custom. This is where you can get additional features such as side tabs, button fly, a bit more detail on the interior, etc. That is an additional cost.

I'm not sure if retailers are set up for MTM without a trunk show and a representitive from Ring Jacket on hand to do the measuring. I would contact the retailer you plan to visit during your trip to see if MTM is available on a walk-in basis.

I've had a few suits and jackets made using the Custom program through Khakis Carmel and have been very happy with the results. Each time, I have used fabrics from other books other than Ring Fabrics. I can't say I am a big fan of Ring's stock fabrics since they tend to be a loose weave and have a dry feel. That may be ideal in hot, humid climates but not for my year-round needs. That is also one of the other advantages of working through Khakis since they have a ton of Fabric books (Loro Piana, Holland & SHerry, etc., etc.,) and they have a lot of experience using them with Ring and other brands. They have offered excellent fabric recommendations.

I'd be going to the ring jacket shop so they definitely have the mtm running. The full bespoke is only in Osaka. I'd need an mtm offering rtw rarely fits me too well. From what I can see the prime mtm starts around 1500 us which is reasonable. Thanks for the tips, I'd be looking for a summer fabric in any case so I'm not too concerned.

You will love Ring, I like Gus and Murls have gotten multiple jackets and suits from Ring. For the price, value, fitting, and styling, I find it hard to beat. Most RTW is about the same price of MTM with Ring. Custom again adds more which I am fortunate to not have to do.

Very true! There's nothing quite like them on the market. A bespoke fit at the RTW level.
