I bought two suits from a travelling Hong Kong tailor about 6 months apart back when I knew nothing about suits. Now that I know slightly more than nothing I must refer to your great council as something just doesn't add up.
Inspecting both suits, they appear to be identical in construction. In performing the pinch test just below the buttons on the front of the jacket I can feel a distinct inner (rigid?) layer which my other cheaper store bought suits don't have. This inner layer is present all the way down the the bottom bottom of the suit and feeling along the bottom of the suit I can feel this layer until about half way from the button line to the start of the vent (which seems to resemble the white part in this picture). On the inside of the jacket underneath where the lapels would be on both sides there is a very faint and widely spread line of stitching in the vertical direction. On the outside of the jacket underneath the collar there is a grey carpet looking fabric sewn in. Turning the pants inside out there is lining going all the way down to the knees.
Both suits are made from allegedly super 150's Caesar Romeo wool, jacket lining is silk, cost was AU$500 each.
I know I'm a new member with a low post count, I'm not intending this post to be about HK tailors or trying to advertise a particular one in a sneaky fashion, I'm just trying to determine whether these suits of mine are of any decent quality or not as it seems these are fully canvas jackets with 150 wool for what in comparison is ridiculously cheap as every other tailor I can find seems to be charging double or triple. Now like I said, I don't know much about suits, but it seems just enough to be dangerous, so anyone help me out, what else should I check or what else can I do to determine whether these are good quality suits or at least worth their price?
