Hello All,

Bought a blazer in a store and took measurements there for alteration (lengthen the sleeve and take in for the waist). I can't pick up in the store so they shipped it to me.

But I noticed something weird after trying it on. And I really need your opinion if I should just return it because I'm moving out of state in four days and already have my car shipped... Many many thanks indeed!

1. There seems to be excessive fabric behind the arm. I guess it's not something normal. But I don't know if it was there when I bought it or due to the alterations. See pictures here:

2. The collar has a lot of wrinkles. Is this something normal? See picture here:

Looks to me like the tailor's botched the attempted alterations. I doubt the problem is with the initial construction because I've seen $150.00 Lauren blazers that would fit better than this. Not sure how much of the sleeve issue is due to your slightly reclined position, but regardless, it does not seem to have been re-attached properly. Do you have a photo of it just on the hanger? Regardless, the collar is definitely a problem and renders the blazer pretty much unwearable in this condition. I don't know how any respectable tailor/store could let a customer walk off with that in good conscience.

Thank you Quirk. The tailor had already screwed up the alterations once because she didn't replace the buttons properly (how interesting). So the store ordered another one and this time I only asked for sleeves and waist alterations.

One thing that's puzzling me is which of these two alterations would make the sleeves and collar like this. But I don't think it was like this when I tried it on before alterations...

Some more pictures. First one is when it's on the hanger, second one is when I grab the hem of the sleeves:

I don't have the knowledge of suit construction to know for certain what caused the problem, but my unschooled layman's guess would be that they took in the back seam of the jacket and were left with too much collar material to reattach to the reduced surface area, if that makes any sense. Anyway, figuring out how they screwed up is not your concern -- I would just return the thing post haste and insist on a full refund, no matter who you end up having to speak with. Good luck!

p.s. and don't let them try to talk you into further alterations/adjustments - they clearly have no idea what they're doing.

Thank you Quirk for your help. I'll go ahead and return this thing.

The pitch of the sleeve is off for your posture, and it is also too big. Nothing to do with the alterations.

The wrinkling on the collar (end everywhere else) is because someone steamed this garment. It's a mess and needs a really good pressing.

Thank you for the input. You are right. When my arm is in a more natural position, the puckering is gone. But when I force my arm to be perpendicular to the ground just like in the pictures, it shows up. I went to the store yesterday and also tried some other jackets and it's the same thing. So I guess that is no longer that big a problem.

My other suit jacket is indeed one size smaller than this one. When I wear the smaller size, the fit is slimmer. When I wear this bigger size which is actually what I measure, it's a bit more relaxed. Hope when I wear a shirt underneath and have my arm in a natural position, it won't appear to be too big.

I looked up a little bit online and saw someone said the "rippling" is indeed due to steaming. Yesterday the person in the store did a pressing and now the rippling is gone and they said it shouldn't come back.
