Mahogany would just be more common for a house built by the wealthy in the 18th century, his house looked really old. Thomas Chippendale, the london cabinet maker, used Mahogany specifically.
Stained oak was more common to the arts and crafts movement in America, often stained or at least finished in a dark shellac.
Soap finished white oak floors and likely wall panels are more common to the Scandinavian countries from the mid-century on.
