Updating Wardrobe/sportcoat on the way out

Or I should say sportcoat at risk of being sent to charity.

This coat is a bit short but I only wear it with dark jeans so it may be passable in that context. Otherwise it is a nice flannel material that has much life left. Still I feel there might be something unbalanced with the fit. Perhaps it is too top heavy with this lapel to be so short? Or maybe the styling is dated for a gentleman in 2013 (it is over 12 years old)?

I value the opinions here quite a bit. Thanks.

Here is another sportcoat in cotton. This is about 2 inches shorter than a suit jacket which I think is a perfect fit. I know this is a matter of opinion regarding casual sportcoats so I just ask if this aesthetically looks bad on me?

I am considering buying another in a cotton/linen that is the same length
