Summer Ball - Black Tie / White Tie ?

Hope I am allowed to ask this question here, I can't really find anywhere else to ank!

Our company has a summer ball in a health and spa resort in Essex (no comments please!) and the majority of men will be wearing dinner suits, black bow-tie's.  Some will just wear a suit and tie but it's not a strict dress code so long as you're smart.

I have a black dinner suit I'm wearing, which fits nice but I don't want to look like everyone else so I've bought a white bow-tie and a white pocket square.  Is this acceptable?  Or is white bow-tie / white tie reserved for extra special occaisions?  Is it acceptable to wear a blue bow-tie for example or claret?  I just want to have at least some identity amongst everyone else wearing their dinner suits and bow ties!

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Scott

Wear a black bow tie. White is only for tails. Red is only for waiters.

Scott, you say you want to stand out, but what makes you think all the other men going won't think the same? Then everyone ends up wearing coloured/patterned bowties and they still look the same. Just wear a nice classic dinner suit with the traditional accessories and leave the flamboyance to the women.

haha, fair enough!  Thanks for your replies.

I know the people that are going though, it will be plain dinner suits & black bow-tie's all round.  Waiters won't be wearing bow-ties.

I guess if I wear a good fitting suit then that will stand out enough considering some of the outfits from the previous year!

You know what, Scott? I'm glad you've actually considered the advice given. So often on this forum, a new member asks a question even though they've already made up their mind, and just complains when they get an answer contrary to their original opinion. So kudos to you. And if it helps at all, look at this picture. And do you think it would look better with a coloured bowtie?

When president Obama wore a white tie with his inaugural dinner suit (twice?) there was some discussion as to the etiquette of doing so, and IIRC some sages decided it wasn't totally wrong as there was some precedent, probably rooted deep in the distant history of the gradual crossover from white tie and tails to black tie and dinner jacket.

Anyway I agree with the above advice, although Roetzhel seems to advocate for a red silk pocket square to add a discreet pop of colour it you absolutely can't stomach monochrome. I'm pretty sure I've seen members of the Rat Pack do likewise.

I might have been tempted to wear the white had I not come on here but I really wasn't sure so for something like this I wanted to be sure.

I did see the Obama white bow-tie pictures but I'm not Barrack Obama and I'm not going to the same kind of events as he is either so I wasn't sure about those pictures either!

I did however see the picture of Daniel Craig and have purchased a white hankerchief / pocket square as I think this will be a nice little touch that is subtle but effective.

In his book "Dressing the Man" (which is the most expensive book I've ever bought), Alan Flusser offers the idea of only using coloured accessories when they are completely framed by black. This includes pocket handkerchiefs, but excludes bowties, as they have the face above them and the white shirt below.
