Correct. It's a typical San Francisco home with the garage at ground level and an interior staircase up to the main level.

If we want to instill the habit of taking off shoes in ourselves and our boys, I think the shoes just need to live somewhere before the transition into the living space. It would also ensure that the sand and other crap inside their shoes stays downstairs. The other possibility we've considered is a bench with storage at the top of the stairs, but that requires finding a new home for the bookshelves currently installed there, and so on...
