The Definitive Guide to Slim Fit Shirts - Page 140

Anyone have any experience with Black Brown 1826?  It appears to be an in house Lord & Taylor brand; they have some decent looking/feeling shirts.  They also are nicely priced (especially b/c of the current sale).  I just discovered the brand last night right before the mall closed so I didn't get to try a shirt on.

 

I'm actually asking b/c while I didn't get to try on a one of their shirts, I was able to slip on a light jacket; it fit me almost too tightly around the mid section/waist!  I almost NEVER see that!  I'm wondering if the rest of their clothes run similarly fitted.  Please let me know.

 

EDIT:

I'm also wondering about TOPMAN shirts.  TOPMAN kinda reminds me of a Zara or something.  Anyone have any of their shirts to comment on?

I'm just wondering what store carried the black and brown 1826 shirts? I have a sweater from them from a while back (non slim fitted or anything), bit wide in the midsection but if they have some slim fitted shirts as narrow as the jacket you mentioned I'd be interested in looking into it.
 

 

Well I did verify that it's a Lord & Taylor brand so that's the only place you'll find it carried. I haven't gotten a chance to go back yet, and try on anything else to verify the fit of other pieces. I'll see if I can find the jacket I tried out to give you an idea of what based my comment on.

Just wanted to post a quick update here.  I am currently awaiting a shipment of some CT Tailored fit shirts (16.5 collar / 36 sleeve) and I have already received my TML Fully Fitted shirts (again, 16.5 collar / 36 sleeve).  Once the CT shirts arrive, I will measure the CT, TML and a Hugo Boss slim fit 16.5, 36/37 (either black label or red label, I forget).  I will post the results in this thread.

The problem I have with J Crew and Banana Republic slim fit shirts is that while they cut the body slimmer both companies left the neck size the same as their regular cut.  Since I have a 15 neck and 34-35 arms the body fits ok but the neck size in their "large" shirts is 16 to 16.5 so I have way too much space around the collar.  I've tried medium tall which they don't offer much of and while the neck and body width are ok, the arms and body length are way too long.  

 

I'll add another option - I've scrateched these off my list.  I bought a John Varvatos Star collection shirt recently and it fit me great all the way around.

Interesting info.... I haven't looked at Varvatos yet.  Can you give me an idea what the drop on the shirt is from chest to waist?

 

My Charles Tyrwhitt shirts arrived the other day.  I haven't had a chance to measure yet, but I definitely have some very distinct impressions about Charles Tyrwhitt vs TM Lewin at this point.

Again, my neck is 16.5", my arms are 36" from the middle of my shoulders, my chest is 41" - 42", my waist is 34" - 35" and I'm 6' 1" tall.  Both the TML and CT are 16.5" neck / 36" sleeve and both are the slimmest fit available (fully fitted and tailored, respectively).  They are all the type of shirts that you'll see being offered as part of the 4 for $200 type deals from both companies (ie, they aren't the super-premium shirts that each company offers a few of).

 

Charles Tyrwhitt: (note, I bought these used although they were worn about once a piece and probably not washed):

• Noticeably baggy, especially through the waist.
• Cuffs are quite small:  I have thinner wrists/hands and I cannot get the shirts on and off without unbuttoning the two cuff buttons.
• They do not have buttons for the opening that continues up the sleeve a short way after the cuff buttons closed: a lot of shirts have a single button on this part of the shirt to keep this openings closed (which I prefer).
• The twill shirt is thick and luxurious feeling.  It will not be transparent.
• The poplin shirts are thin and will be transparent.
• The collars are pretty darn snug.
• The arms would be the correct length if the sleeves weren't so tight that they restrict where the sleeves go.
• Haven't worn these yet, just tried them on so I can't comment about wrinkling.

 

TM Lewin: (new)

• Slimmer than the CT shirts through the chest, waist and arms.
• The cuffs are substantially wider than the CT shirts.  I could do with ones somewhere inbetween, but given my preference, I'd choose TML ones b/c they don't have to be unbuttoned to put on/take off the shirts.
• The twill feels nice albeit not as thick as the CT twill.  This seems to very easily wrinkle around the arm bend and hold the wrinkles.  (Wrinkles practically instantly upon bending your arm).
• The poplin feels thicker and more substantial than the CT poplin.  Still slightly transparent, though not as bad as the CT will be.
• Collars are just about perfect: one wash and they will be I'm sure.
• The sleeve length is perfect right now: I'm slightly concerned that they will shrink after washing.  :-/  Probably going to go with dry clean/hand wash only as a result.

 

All in all, I far prefer the TML shirts.  I think in the future I will look for other shirts of better quality than both.  I really don't have the $ for bespoke right now, so I may just start using online tailoring sites like modern tailor.  Hopefully they have some decent fabrics that won't break the bank, and hopefully I can get the perfect fit on the first or second try. 

I just picked up some Kenneth Cole Reaction slim fits at Macy's on sale a couple weeks back. For work shirts the patterns and colors were good.

I was pleasantly surprised to see how well they fit (15", 34/35). Snug but not constricting, and no excess material at the waist. The arms were nice and slim as well. They don't wrinkle easily and stay nice and tucked all day long. In comparison to some more expensive slim fit shirts, I think the Reaction might have them beat, at least for me.

Does TM Lewin Fully Fitted have pleats in the back / shoulders or is it a plain back? Thanks in advance.

I tried on a few calvin klein slim fit shirts and while it feels ok I'm not sure the slim fit is good on me.

The best fitting slim shirt I ever had is Lorenzini. I am on a slender side, 6'3, 34 waist, 40 L is the perfect size for me. Lorenzini fits like it was tailor made for me.

What do you think about the fit on this RTW shirt? I thought it was too slim around my hip, but maybe not? The shoulders fits, right?

Sounds like you're a bit taller than me and slimmer through the chest.  What are your actual neck, chest and sleeve measurements?   

Looks good to me, but then again, I'm noob so I'll defer to others' opinions.

 

Hey. Just popped in this thread on my quest for shirts that fit me. Is there some kind of a consensus on the best brands according to slimness and quality?

Shoulders look big. See how the seam looks to be falling off? Your left looks to be about an inch to low and your right about 1/2 an inch. Collar looks great, but the arms and waist can get taken in by a tailor. I would say its worth getting tailored as you can get rid of what I see as excess fabric, but that is personal taste and to others, this may seem to fit.
