Long time lurker, first time poster. So I've been looking at all the briefcase threads, and I'm torn between these two briefcases:

Custom Hide 1945 U.S. Army, $389+U.S. shipping
1000

Henry Tomkins Full Monty (without the front pocket)
700

£265-£30=£235 ($358+considerable shipping)

I'm mostly considering these things:

1. Shipping/tax
I know the HT will cost a lot in terms of shipping (I've read £45 somewhere), but I was wondering if I'd get taxed at customs? And I'm guessing the Custom Hide one will be a lot cheaper? (I think they offer UPS Ground)

2. Quality?
I've read mixed reviews on both; I'm particularly concerned about scratching. Some people like it (the Saddleback types) but personally I'd like to minimize/dampen the scratchy look...

3. Alternatives
Any better/similar deals from other makers? Filson, Lotuff, Clegg, Brigg, etc. are all out of my range. I'm a poor college student :embar: and could probably spend $400-$450 max. It sucks that a few other makers have either closed up shop or raised their prices considerably (MW Traveler, The Sawyer Cabinet Co., etc.)...

Sorry if this has been discussed a lot before, but I really don't want to regret my purchase (especially the Tomkins, which will be really difficult to fix/return) :thumbs-up:
