Burberry Trench Coat (Pictures)

Hey all,

I am about to get a trench coat. The picture below shows the two ones I am primarily considering.

Left: Burberry Britton, 50R (88cm)
Right: Burberry Winbourne/Trench 37, 50R (98cm)

Beneath the coat itself, I was wearing a light woolen sweater and a suit jacket. The coat is supposed to be worn not only in combination with a full-fledged suit beneath but also in cases when I am just wearing shirts/T-shirts/sweaters without a jacket.

I would be grateful for any suggestions/recommendations concerning the size/fit/model of the coat. Does the Britton seem too short for my height? Then again, the Britton does seem a bit more defined in the area of the upper body.

I'm sure you're going for a more fashionable look, but those (especially on the left) won't function well in the rain. They're both too short and will leave your pants wet if, in fact, your purpose is to buy something that prevents rain from soaking you.

What are you looking for in a coat like this? Do you want it to serve a purpose or would you rather have something that looks like Burberry's website? (No snark intended whatsoever, genuinely trying to get what you want)

Regarding the protection of rain and weather, both would sufficiently suit my purpose and expectations. And you're right, I am indeed trying to achieve one that is similar to those shown on their website.
Taking this into account, I am mainly concerned with the look, especially the coat being (hopefully) fashionable in a few years time too.

Thank you!

Would the length of either of these coats be too short for, let's say, a rather conserative business setting?

Way too short. I, for one, like the styling of their trench coats. But most of them are way too short for me and I'm only 5'10. I saw a dude walking down the street wearing the coat on your left picture, and he looked feminine to say the least. Short trench coats for men look bad.

That's definitely another thing to consider. Additionally, I'm about 6'4", so this consideration is even more exacerbated.

You're not going to be wearing the coat in a meeting. But the one one the left just looks too short.

It's a pity they don't make a longer version of the Britton. I really like how defined especially the sleeves and the shoulder are.
But I naturally DO see what you guys are saying. Even to myself, the one on the left looks a tad too short.

I don't think either are appropriate for a conservative business environment and I wouldn't wear a trench when it isn't raining. Having said that, I know the look you're going for, so I'll try to come up with suggestions.

Are you committed to a double breasted jacket?

If you want to try the look out without spending Burberry money, here's something from Zara:

http://www.zara.com/at/en/man/jackets/trench-coat-with-detachable-lining-c358050p1193048.html

If you buy it and find out you're not crazy about it or it doesn't look right, you're not out the €600+ Burberry is likely asking.

Another option would be to go with a Mackintosh:

Thanks so much for your effort!

I have already experimented with other double-breasted trenchcoat-esque jackets/coats and I totally love that look! And yes, the coat being double-breasted is a definite must for me

I might try the right one a size smaller and see how that fits. (Although I'm not sure if the sleeves would still be long enough - granted, I'm wearing a jacket underneath so the sleeves are normally even longer)

Let's say I don't take the various considerations of a conservative business environment into account - even then I would assume that the length of the right one is generally more appropriate (but still relatively short - being a 'coat') for my height?

^ Correct. Trench coats are perfectly fine in CB environment. Like I said, you're not wearing in the office, you're wearing it to the office.

Those coats are way to short -- the one on the left is comically short. What's the point in getting a trench coat if not for the rain protection? If you're 6'4, why not look at a 40L instead of a regular?
