I totally missed Canta's entry. He would have gotten my vote.

Thanks, kai. Sadly, my plan failed.

See, I couldn't see that. My guess was a fine herringbone fabric. And a light blue shirt. -> Need better pics. smile.gif

you're right, could be micro herringbone solaro...

I could certainly construct an argument to change one or two things to make each fit more traditionally elegant for most of the entrants, but what would you change on Vaux's? The fit is great, the colours are spot on for the season, and the overall effect is certainly elegant to my eye. I suppose if I were creating an archetype of elegance, I would lengthen the sleeve lengths slightly & tuck the hanky in more. Was that what you were thinking of, or something else? If so, I feel we'd lose something of the man's personal character in favour of a less impressive clothing ideal. IOW, the higher elegance in this case comes from that 5% of individual choice, added to the 95% of orthodoxy.

I usually tend to agree with a lot of your posts/thinking (or at the very least, can grasp your position), so I'm curious as to what you're picking up in Vaux's fit here.

BTW, anyone who wanted to win this contest should have scheduled a black tie event for last Friday; the inbuilt cultural associations of that outfit with elegance would have probably automatically netted them a vast number of votes, provided the outfit fit moderately correctly.

I was thinking this as well, to the point where I dropped the hint towards evening dress in the OP!
I think almost everyone came through with a good fit this week, some where exceptionally good. Thin White Duke posted, for me, his personal best that I can recall.

There actually was a black tie event last week that I was invited to, but I didn't feel like going. I should have thought of the contest. laugh.gif

Ah, but then you would have had to organise next weeks challenge, I think you subconsciously chose to sabotage your chances to save you from this seemingly Sisyphean penance!
(I was horrified to find myself in a tie yesterday, I'm glad people have come to their senses! )

Quick outfit analysis.  The majority of the participants wore dark suits with white or blue spread collar shirts and white pocket squares.  Those not wearing a suit wore dark sport coats, half with dark pants and half with light pants.  There were a lot of knit and grenadine ties as well.  I've always considered knit and grenadine ties to be elegant, but informal.  I may be mistaken about that.

I feel that sprezz and elegance are on opposite ends of the spectrum.  Many of the fits had a flash of sprezz that detracted from the elegance of the outfit.  I'm obviously not one to talk.  I enjoy being sprezzy, but here I withheld my desire.  Case in point, TTO's purple socks.  I love his socks, but I think it detracts from the overall elegance of his outfit.  Didn't prevent him from getting my vote though.

Elegance is situational.  I consider Butler's outfit to be the most elegant of the bunch, but it would not be very elegant in most office situations.  It would be perfect however for a summer wedding where one wants to look good, but not stand out too much.

Lastly, color choice and fit are very important in portraying elegance.  The tighter and more coordinated the palette the better.  Navy and brown, navy and grey, tan and green, etc.  And given that there is little to distract the eye, fit is of extreme importance.  The slightest fit issue is magnified.

In last week's challenge it was 90 degrees in NYC.  This Friday it was raining cats and dogs.  In both challenges, I posted what I wore that day without changing anything.  This week, I wore my waterproof rain blazer and my shoes that I don't mind getting wet.  Does anyone pick an outfit particularly for this challenge and just wear it for the challenge or is this what you wore the entire day.  I would have loved to change my shoes and jacket, but felt it may be dishonest.

+1 to TWD pulling out his best fit to date.

as to the black tie idea, if i had a navy suit (one is in the works), i would have worn it with black shoes and a black tie.
