JUNE NO PURCHASE CLUB

Man of Lint is taking some well deserved R&R and has passed the club off to me. And like any good upstart, I'm making a few changes.

In my eyes, our issue is making unwise spending choices (like the horse from Sex in the City, impulse buying every shoe that catches her fancy), thus June NPC will address this. It will encourage restraint and wisdom rather than total abstention.

The official dates: June 2, 11:59PM - June 28, 11:59PM
Why these dates? Well, the two days at the start of June are to give those of us who participated in May time to settle our tailoring bills and/or address any other clothing needs for the next month. As far as the early end...

Delayed gratification is the name of the game
As stated earlier, the goal of June NPC is not abstention but rather the curbing of impulse purchases. In this thread, you should post any and all temptations you encounter throughout the month. At the end of the month, you should look back and reevaluate your temptations, asking for advice from the thread if you see fit. After reevaluating the stuff you almost bought, should you still feel like it is a wise or necessary addition in your wardrobe, you are to use the days of June 29 and June 30 to add them.

A secondary note: I personally will be using this as an award system for myself. I make it the entire month without purchasing anything--there is nothing I need--I will guilt free buy myself a Drakes tie.

One-for-one karma
The idea here is restraint, not abstention; if NPC gives you enough pause to reconsider that douchey Abercrombie and Fitch shirt you've been eying at the mall, it's done its job. However, sometimes we come across deals foolish to pass up (such a 3 dollar E. Cappelli tie) so....

All transgressions are to be addressed with a dollar for dollar donation (via Paypal) to one of the following:

- Wikipedia Foundation
- Oxfam
- Habitat for Humanity
- Children in Need

The lucky fellow with the 3 dollar Cappelli would need to donate 3 dollars to the Wikipedia Foundation. Upon this donation, the NPC will consider his soul balanced, his slate clean, and he will be a member of the NPC in full standing.

Failure to make said donation will demote you from a member in full standing to a probationary member. Further transgressions will result in mockery, belittlement, and chores.

Everything else
Alright, most of us know the rules. No purchasing of clothing or associated accessories (watches, shoes, pocket squares, ties, etc). No unnecessary fixes (taking in the sides of that jacket can wait). $100 dollar emergency fund is available to those who sign up before June 3rd, but use of the fund is dependent on approval from either MoL, myself, ChetBakerSings, or if he shows and up agrees to be a dick about it, FCF.

Purchasing for others is alright.
Trades between friends or forum members are fine. Trades at thrift shops are not.

All transgressions are to be posted here. All temptations are to be posted here.

Please try to sign up before June 3rd.

I'm in again. I am pretty sure I will make it through May. I may end up exchanging a pair of shoes (and possibly ending up with a slightly more expensive pair) on one of the days off. Other than that, I don't need anything.

For information purposes, I will be sitting out from June to the end of September.
I am happy to help out with adjudication, but if someone needs me, best message me because I may or may not be monitoring this thread on a daily basis. Thank you Claghorn for helping out with the club. It is greatly appreciated. I am suffering from some burn-out so need the rest.
To all members who may be in need of some self-discipline, I encourage you to give this club a try. Lastly, I would like to encourage again, all non-SF member lurkers to take a few minutes and sign up to Styleforum and participate in our wonderous community here. There are many features of the forum that are only accessible, or even visible to members. Membership is free of charge and takes all of 5 minutes to process. I wish all who sign up, success in this coming month. :)

I am in for June. I know it will be hard … specially in June there will be many clearances. I was thinking of what I may buy during the window between the May and June NPC club. Then I said to my self. I don’t need anything. It will be just plain waste of money. I need to stay strong.

What made April and May easier for me is that I had commissioned a jacket and a suit at the end of February. The fittings took me through the end of May. I found that someone lessened my urge to spend. As far as June, just keep an active list of what you would have purchased (or what you want, a la Beatlegeuse), post it here, and at the end of June see about picking up a few of those items.

With items I buy on clearance, there are always one or two items that I like, but I end up buying 4 or 5 items that I may wear in the future...and I never do. I no longer go to outlets for this reason: though I might find a good deal, my savings are always erased by the mistakes I make when buying the other clothes.

Just curious, how do we stand on clothing care accessories - hangers, shoe cream, etc? I need a new iron and probably a shoe brush. I can easily hold out a month for them, but regardless, do things like that count?

I'm in for another month.

I'm making it a goal this month to sell a bunch of clothes I've been meaning to get rid of. I'll use the funds to make some carefully planned purchases at the end of June.

You've got until the 3rd to buy them. Those things are generally judgment calls; regardless, if you know you'll need them, you've got 5 days to buy them.

The idea of the club is to abstain from purchasing on yourself. Gifts for others have never been an issue, at least not under my watch. Dunno if Clag allows it or not.

Just in case it needs a qualifier, its not clothing for someone else that I will also enjoy (i.e. lingerie gifts). Its likely going to be purse. i loathe purse holding even in the car.
