Need help with basic Balmorals

Thread Starter

I'm a 26-year-old guy that's just started giving a fsck about what he looks like. Since I'm a programmer, I tend to have only one pair of dress shoes for synagogue / symphony / wedding / funeral / &c duty, and I've just realized my pair of slip-on square-toe J&M's with a big buckle on the front are hideous. So I'm looking for a basic plain- or cap-toe Balmoral Oxford for all-around dress-shoe duty. So far, I've mainly been partial to Alden and AE; my current favorites are this from Alden or the AE Park Ave. Also, they need to be relatively conservative, since I'll likely be wearing them to my grandmother's funeral pretty soon. So I guess my questions are:

* Is there anything wrong with the shoes I'm looking at?

* Is there any reason to prefer one of those shoes over the other?

* Is there anything else I ought to be looking at for a basic, conservative Oxford?

* I'm in a pretty good financial situation; should I stick with calfskin or would it be worth it to shell out for something in shell?

Thanks!

I think you should be fine with either Alden or AE. But, I'd personally go with Alden as I think they're the better company and if you can afford them you might as well get the best quality shoe you can buy.

With that said, I'd probably go with a cap toe balmoral over plain. Shell is very nice and if you're willing to spend more for it then go for it. I have a pair of shell cap toe bals from TSM and they're the best investment I ever made

confused.gif Oivay! well you have two choices:
1) Buy the Park Avenues and have money left over for flowers and a shovel.
2) Show your grandmother what you typed behind her back. Her renewed will to live, just to spite you, will negate the need for flowers, in which case, you'll have enough for a nice pair of Alden.

Welcome to Styleforum Shavely.

Edit: wait...I just thought of a 3rd option

3) Show this thread to your grandmother. She'll want to live longer just to spite you, in which case you should buy the Park Avenues and buy her flowers anyway
for plotting and scheming.

In Alden price territory, I'd prefer this http://www.herringshoes.co.uk/product-info.php?&brandid=55&shoeid=6906
In AE territory, this www.herringshoes.co.uk/product-info.php?&brandid=55&shoeid=7005
or this http://www.herringshoes.co.uk/product-info.php?&shoeid=2018&colourid=1076&brandid=6

All are as well constructed or better at the same price point. All are sleeker in both last and welt. All have single leather soles, which is much preferred in a dress/formal shoe.

Just my $0.02 and interesting enough to get me to post for the first time in 5 or 6 years.....
