Where does Gilded Age get off

charging a f***ing fortune for its jeans? I mean, I know the high-end denim market has gotten a little out of hand, but their $400 minimum has me completely mystified and a little outraged. You can get 45rpm for less than that; does GA just sell to suckers who like the idea of an "exclusive" brand? I have no interest in buying any of their stuff; I'm just curious as to how they even pretend to justify their prices. I'm assuming the fact they're never discussed here or on SuFu means they're not much to write home about...

I was wondering about that. I had never heard of them, but I bought one of their polos at a Barneys sale. I think I paid $50 or so, but that was 75% off retail. I couldn't imagine paying $200 for that shirt. Even at $50, it wasn't exactly a bargain, but I liked the fit and fabric texture, and it was still cheaper than a typical Lacoste polo on sale (I've since discovered H&M polos, but that's another story).

In my opinion they need to establish themselves as a good brand before they can charge like that.

That's sort of my point - a few months back they were mentioned as one of GQ's top ten jeans for something or other, but as I noted above there's been little discussion about them by in-the-know types on the internets I read. I mean, it's one thing if they use Oni AI or PBJ AI levels of craftsmanship, but somehow I don't think that's the case.

Their products are supposedly made to standards that date pre-industrialization with the same methods that were used back then. Is this true or is it bullshit that the salesmen push on me when I'm looking at the stuff in a store?

Oh, and have you seen their plain cotton t-shirts? Some of them run close to $300 each.

I'm thinking its a gimmick, but thats me.

I may be wrong but I think I saw this brand in Barneys last year. Is it the one with labeling incorporating some old New York Industry styleeez!?. They had the denim laid out on a palete. If so it was very boring, the washes are no better than 1921 or a top line RRL. I do recall being aghast at the prices.

Yup, Barney's COOP carries them; they have a pair for $565 on their site, which is what got me all worked up.

Their gigantic cashmere turtlenecks were very, very nice, but at $800 retail or whatever, ridicululous, and even marked down to $350 I passed because they were completely impractical. All their stuff seemed really nice but ridiculously priced.

I liked some of the jackets I saw at Bloomingdale's but agree with everyone, the prices are eyebrow-raising. If I saw the jeans, they left no impression on me.

Ha, I tried on a pair at Lileo... in grey. 'Coal-dyed'....

Wasn't really impressed. Then saw the price-tag at $850... WTF are they thinking?

i wonder if that's true. i don't know when 45rpm came to the states, but wasn't that a crashcourse in high end denim as well? pricing sets the brand insted of vice versa

Gilded Age doesn't have 10% of the artisinal value and credability of 45rpm. Sure there will have been the quota of rich Soho stock broker knuckle heads who bought for price and couldn't give two shits about how the product is made, history etc. For the most part people saw the true intent, meaning and values 45rpm offers evidently lacking from a brand like Gilded Age and the majority of US denim companies. I can only think of 5 EP as a US denim brand that's evolving with morality.

i'm not saying that guilded age does have the history/artisan value of 45rpm. Just playing devil's advocate....

as for american brands i think corpus, crate, and rag & bone all have some value in their products. especially rag & bone. But crate and corpus offer interesting denim and uppers as well.

Yeah, Rag & Bone is another company with value, though I'm not a fan, especially when it comes to there Catwalk shows!..why?.. Corpus are ok, there pricing is reasonable. Crate I'm not familiar with.
