curious about Carpe Diem, Carol Christian Poell, Maurizio Amadei and such

Hi guys,

CD, CCP, MA+, etc... these brands, especially the shoes, are really something new for me. Please comment on the following:

1. What is the history, or the origin of such designs? Are they wholly made up by design school alumni or is there a historical point of reference? This is not referring to the traditional footwear elements such as side zip or derby lacing but the distressing, the exotic leather, etc...

2. At first I thought they are popular among hype (internet) community or belonging to some obscure trend, but apparently they have solid enough presence that there are cheaper Italian brands that sell similar designs with shittier leathers... I have one pair of black Pantanetti Derby whose round toe shape is clearly influenced. Piergiacomi of Styleforum also have some designs that are a bit similar. So I kinda thought that Italians have been familiar with these type of designs for quite some time. How well known are they actually, then? Are they made in "workshops" or is there a sizeable industry already doing this sort of thing?

3. What is the demographic? Design students? Because them upper middle class nouveau riches tend to buy shit like Ferragamo loafers while the old money crowd looks to bespoke or something.... I know I'm painting with a very broad brush but please do entertain.
