Sleepwalking

So, yesterday I stayed the night at my parents' house. I went to bed pretty early (I believe about 11:45 PM) last night as I was very tired. I wake up at what seems like 4 AM (come to find out it's only 1:30 AM) at the top of the second-to-first floor stairs, staring into my old bedroom and the room I'm sleeping in, with my mom yelling at me from the bottom of the steps. Apparently, a loud crash woke everyone up and this morning I have a bruise pattern that extends from my upper lip to the tip of my nose.

I only recently moved out of my parents' house and I never recall anyone catching me sleepwalking before. I'm living by myself now so it's entirely possible that I've done this recently. I'm kind of worried as: a) it scared the shit out of me and b) it's obviously dangerous if I'm hovering at the top of steps and wake with bruises on my face.

Anyone experience this before? And if so, should I be concerned?

Just don't carry off women:

I did it a couple of times as a kid, but haven't at all since then. It's possible it was just a reaction to sleeping in a now-unusual place, not being comfortable, etc. If you're concerned, you could put a voice activated tape recorder in your room while you sleep to see if anything like that happens again. It's common for people to sleepwalk and go back to bed and not remember any of it.

If it happens again or gets more dangerous/violent, you'll want to talk to a sleep specialist. My grandpa used to have to tie himself into bed because he would get up and flail around and hurt himself almost every night for a while.

Once when I was in high school, my mom woke up to hear someone in the shower. She knocked on the door and asked what I was doing, and I guess I replied that I was getting ready for school. It was 3:30 am and I had my pyjamas on, in the shower.

Haven't had anything occur like that recently that I know of.

My freshman year room mate would sleepwalk, though.

I think you will outgrow it. I had some freaky ones when I was younger, including waking up on my driveway (after exiting the house through my bedroom window); slamming my hand into a closet door frame; throwing a large portable radio off my bedside table; running through a dark room crowded with sleeping bodies (after a house party) on the floor without stepping on anybody ...

I find the episodes rarer and rarer now, and also much tamer. I usually catch myself going out the bedroom door or shutting myself in the ensuite.

Oh, and do you also talk in your sleep?

I used to sleep walk when I was younger. The creepiest episode was when my eldest sister was waiting in her bedroom for my younger sister to come talk to her. She heard scratching at the door for 5 or 6 seconds until I found the door handle. I swung the door open but didn't enter, I just stood there. She asked if I was ok and I proceeded to walk a lap in her room, stop at the door to her room, turn around to face the door and slowly proceeded to close it and then calmly walked back to my room. I have to admit, if I was her I would have been suitably creeped out.

Oh, and then there was the time I pissed down the banister in the stairwell in the middle of the night.

When I was in high school I went to NYC for the first time with my Art History Class. On the last night I kind of came to and felt weird. Once I got my senses I realized I was standing in my boxers only, in the corner of the elevator on the 3rd floor of the hotel when I was staying on the 7th. I freaked out, knocked on the door of the wrong room and finally got in my room an hour later after knocking on my door and finally getting my teacher. The next day I realized that somebody probably had to call the elevator for me to end up on the different floor, and how they must have felt kind of weird with a kid asleep, standing up, almost naked in the elevator.

My sister went through a short phase of sleepwalking in her early teens. During one episode she urinated in the produce drawer of the refrigerator. The doctor said it was probably stress related.

Reminds me of a story I read sometime ago about a guy accused of rape using the defense that he was sleepwalking or should I say "sleepf***ing"

I just had a curious incident of sleepwalking Monday night: After a long and tiring day, I was walking my dog about 10:45 p.m. At some point I fell asleep and kept on walking with my large, powerful dog. After I had progressed about 100 yards, I awoke disoriented, and it took a few moments to realize where I was. Anybody else have any similar experiences?

Did this gentleman end up in jail?

used to have regular bouts of this till hitting my early teens. once they caught me running the faucet in the bathroom, another time I stepped out of our place and almost went out of the building. looking back I used to have this after either eating before going to sleep or when I was tired.

Yes, I've had similar experiences with microsleeps when I've been beyond exhausted

An old friend of mine from college sleepwalks/talks.

Years ago, I was sleeping on the floor at his place after an evening at the pub, and woke up in the middle of the night to see a pair of feet right by my head.

Looking up, he was standing over me, blankly staring straight down at my face. Very slowly, he asked "Is there anyone here with curly hair?". I just said firmly "Go back to bed" and he slowly turned and shuffled like a zombie back to his room.

In the morning he had no recollection of it at all. In fact, he thought it was funny, and I did too, although at the time it was really creepy.

He still does it now; his wife recently found him out of bed during the night, repeatedly switching the bedroom light on and off, and muttering to himself.

back in college, i had the craziest experience. it was just after finals week, so i hadn't gotten much sleep at all the previous couple of days. several of my friends and i decided to go to downtown los angeles (about an hour drive from where i went to school) to party it up. i was one of the few people with a car back then so i was driving lead car of a 3 vehicle caravan.

after about 15 minutes of driving, i was feeling really tired and groggy. all of a sudden, it felt like i had just opened my eyes, and there we were at our final destination!! i didn't remember getting there! we even had to take multiple freeways, drive down several local streets, and i did not remember ANY of that. i asked one of the drivers behind me if he had noticed me driving oddly, and he said not at all. that episode really freaked me out, as i even had 3 people in the car with me. who knows what could have happened! i'm pretty sure i was fully asleep the whole time. now if i'm even slightly tired, i pull over and grab a drink or something to wake my ass up.

when I was younger I sleepwalked. I ended trying to take a bath and my dad would just take me back to my room. I think I still sleepwalk every so often but my place isn't that big.
