gentlemen. i found a year-old article about the chinese joining the denim fray i can only imagine that this will only add to the mystique of japanese denim as the market gets diluted with iffy product no?

hate to say it, but china makes some damn fine denim... i have some at home that compares to some very nice japanese.... i thought it was japanese till i was told otherwise.

only difference is the price.

cmf homme will probably use china denim when it happens... if it is really as good as it seems it is.(i do want to see how it fades, but raw it is beautiful)

The Japanese don't have a monopoly on good denim. There is a lot of potential in China, especially with its proximity to Japan, and the potential for technology transfer. For example, I imagine that Kurabo Japan and Kurabo China share techniques.

i like to think that japanese denim is woven by artisans that love their craft and excel at it. oni, for example, boasts of a loom that only one person has the skill to use. i'd feel cheated to think that you can achieve the same results from low-paid workers that are merely trained to do the job-----these workers, i imagine, don't bleed indigo, only blood.

Yup, sure do.

There is another company called HW Textile, they supply Evisu etc. There denim kicks ass. There HK showroom is pimpin, bar, karioki machine.....

"chinese denim" doesn't have the same magic ring to it that "japanese denim" does
but i guess, 27 years ago, we'd all have a laugh at the very notion of japanese jeans.

Is there such a thing as German denim? Vaguely passe with a '60s air but expensive and strangely reliable when it wants to be.

I don't think this Chinese denim is trying to compete with Oni or other "specialist" brands; there's not much money to be made there. I definitely can see Chinese denim being on par with what APC and the Gap use, though I haven't examined a specimen before. I don't see what's so special about Japan; they don't have 14 year old schoolgirl virgin lolis make it or something. The production techniques could be used anywhere, unless they require a great deal of skill or imagination.

I've often wondered if Japan is to denim as Cuba is to cigars: in the end it's only a location and tells you nothing of its quality or characteristics. I've had some ****** Cubans and I'm sure there's ****** Japanese denim.
