"Creative cocktail" dress code is a host's way of playing a cruel joke on his guests. It has no real meaning, so guests are left to talk to each other to coordinate on a dress code, the common result of which is that the groom's side shows up in suits and ties while the bride's side appears in black pants and stripey open collar shirts.

If it were me, I'd just wear my standard cocktail attire of a dark suit, white shirt, dark tie. If you wanted to exploit the "creative" license more, a bow tie or a waistcoat could be an option.

You would probably be fine with either a light or dark suit. It is summer and at 6pm, it will still easily be light out for another 2-3 hours. However, the reception will probably go into the night, so it is hard to fault a dark suit selection either. If you don't know what to wear, stick with classic. White shirt, solid tie, and appropriate shoes.

Ex. Navy suit, white shirt, burgundy tie, white pocket square, burgundy shoes

Ex. Tan suit, light blue shirt (gingham if you want to step it up a bit), navy tie, white ps, brown shoes.

thanks. is something like navy blazer / wool trousers / white shirt / pink tie too informal? or is a suit required here?

I am certain a well done navy blazer look would be fine in this case.
