BTW, IUtoSLU gave me a great recommendation for a barbecue place when I was in STL last. However, I forget the name of the restaurant. I hope this information helps.
When will you be in Chicago?
I'll try to come there sometime this year, but traveling has been tough with grad school winding down for me.
I likely would have delayed my St. Louis trip as well, but my best friend is getting married on the 30th. Reception dinner will be at Lorusso's Cucina - I'm looking forward to the meal.
Greg, I'd suggest one of many places in the Central West End - it's my favorite part of town. A friend of mine is the chef at Liluma (but it's French fusion). If you want a local beer that's famous within the city, you can go to Schlafly Bottle Works (the service is sometimes incompetent for a brewery). Some of the best BBQ can be found at Pappy's.
None of the places I suggested are fancy, so if you want something comparable to Per Se or the like, I wouldn't recommend them, but if you want decent food in the $25-40 range, you can check out those.
