What do you think about this starter tie collection?

Hi everyone,

I am beginning my tie collection and am on a budget. I've settled on purchasing my first few ties from thetiebar since they are decently priced. I'm thinking about purchasing these four ties first.

Note: These ties will be worn with a charcoal suit until I can budget for a navy suit.

Solid satin burgundy:

Pin dot navy:

Knitted silk blue:

Houndstooh black:

Opinions? Thoughts? Suggestions?

I have the satin burgandy in 3". You may not be able to get a good knot out of a 3" tie however (if only they made a 3.25"!) Otherwise, as others have posted here, tiebar ties are good value for the money. Ebay and SF classifieds would also be a good choice but there is an element of time & luck involved.

How often do you wear a tie? If it's not all that often, you're better off buying one $60 tie than 4 $15 ones. You'll feel much better every time you wear one nice tie, rather than cringing every time you put on a cheap one that doesn't knot well and feels poorly made.

If you do wear ties really often and this is how much you have to spend, I would recommend looking at B&S and thrift stores. You can get really nice knits there for $20, and much nicer silk ties for $30-$40, and then supplement with $5 ties from Goodwill.

If you really have you heart set on thetiebar.com, you should look at something in place of the last one. A gingham, POW, plaid, or repp stripe would all do more for you than a houndstooth if you're just starting out.

Solid satin burgundy: No. If you want a solid burgundy, get it in repp silk.

Pin dot navy: This is fine.

Knitted silk blue: Get this in navy or black instead.

Houndstooh black: No. You would be better off with a solid navy repp or grenadine.

Knit ties stand out. He may not want to stand out that much.

Thanks for all the replies.

The satin burgundy tie intended use was for job interviews. Can you recommend me what I can wear instead?

I won't be wearing ties that often so buying 2 high quality ties sounds like a great idea.

I would like at least one navy knit tie for night outs purposes. The reason why I went with blue was because thetiebar didn't offer Navy. I don't really like black either.

Satin for night-time, twill for day-time.

Solid navy twill and navy w/white pin dots are must-haves. One black silk knit would be great, as would a conservative striped tie. If you want a red tie, I would go with dots again.
