Japanese Leather Goods/Accessories

Hi All,

The thread on Japanese shoemakers has got me wondering if there are artisans that craft exceptional quality leather goods (travel holdalls, duffels, document portfolios, etc.) made with the same attention to detail the shoemakers seem to exhibit in their work?

Curious, how many leather tanneries are there in Japan, and do many Japanese producers use them? I have a card case made from Japanese shell cordovan, and quite like it - at least for the purposes of a card case - over the stuff from Horween.

Some lovely work in this thread, the Newmarket Tan case looks like SAB level case making.

I`m not sure of the total number, but Himeji, Hyogo Province, alone has about 80 or so tanneries in operation.

Tochigi Leather is perhaps the best known (located near Tokyo), and are favored by quite a few known leather manufactures.

Shinki Hikaku is the only one in Japan that can produce Shell Cordovan (though there are other horsehide tanneries).
Warmcrafts Manufacture brand is a subsidiary of Shinki Hikaku.

I'd heard the English tanneries export quite a bit to Japan, not sure how true it its though
