I'm a long-time lurker who finally surfaced to find answers to a personal question. My dad is in his 50's and works at a managerial position at an engineering firm in Korea. I want to get him a necktie this year, as I am getting interested in fashion.
It is my hope that I will get him something of quality that he would normally not get himself.
Here is my thinking process:
- He is conservative in fashion, so light blue or light grey would be a safe choice.
- Just something professional that exudes quality and taste...
- He is about 5' 4" 32" waist, but I don't think he will like 2.5" skinny ties; I would say 3" standard should work. Shorter the tie the better I would think...
But the hard part is knowing which brand to go with. This is where I really need your help. Amazon and retail stores carry THOUSANDS. My goal is to find quality product but avoid paying excessive premium for brand name if possible (I'm a poor student with much debt). I want to say that the absolute max is perhaps $70 for the tie. And I say this with hesitation because I don't have the taste for quality in neckties yet. For instance, I just browsed Kent Wang's website and saw that the ties were around $80 there. Since he isn't a major corporation that uses heavy advertising, I'm leaning to believe that the price should be relatively honest to quality, but my self-conflict is that I just don't know how to appreciate the quality.
Please give the guidance to this poor uneducated fool and allow me to buy a proper gift for my dad.
Thank you SF.
