I am very new to selvedge jeans. I undersand the process, but I don't really understand how to KNOW for sure if a pair is selvedge. I've heard people say the red thread...but couldn't anyone just use read thread?

Anyway. Just found these levis. I have no idea what cut they are, but would these be considered selvedge? If so, why. If not, why not? thanks guys!

Does it have to have the white on the sides?

Just seems odd to me...

the red thread doesn't matter. infact, color doesn't matter, i've seen blue, red, purple selvedge lines.

notice the selvedge denim is finished on the end, no loose threads. then look at your picture, the denim is just cut, raw on the ends, with an overlock stitch over it so it doesn't unravel.

all that being said, selvedge doesn't really matter that much and isn't an indicator of quality anymore. iirc target was selling selvedge denim for like $20 or something a while back, and there are some companies making pretty good denim that isn't selvedge.
