Learn from the master!

not a fan at all.... most of these look like hats retailed from low end fashion stores; flashy without great fit and style. I'm a bald guy too, so I can ask this without hesitation about insulting; but why some many hats? If not a compensation for the lack of natural head covering, it might appear to be that to others.

I love this look! ...although very gangster looking.

The idea of a black straw hat makes no sense. Straw hats should be worn in the summer so tend to look best in more summery colours, like most panama hats.
Also black hats are very formal and straw hats informal.
Finally, a more traditional brim shape tends to look better.

Ah, that's a bit more helpful, Thanks! I'm from California so it's almost always sunny and summer weather. :) The person I wanted to purchase it for is from California as well.

I wanted something both casual and formal if that makes any sense. That website just has great prices and I had a coupon code for it so I thought I'd first get some opinions and suggestions before purchasing.

I'll keep looking -- I hope more people respond

Best to pick if you wish for formal or casual. Hats are one thing that doesn't seem to span the spectrum very well. Get one for each purpose.

Well at a price of 30 dollars you are not going to get much of a hat.
You might want to look at Stetson Milan's

They generally go for 85.00 dollars
Here is the New Hall model.

Ed's suggestion of Stetson milan's is a good one - Dobb's also make decent milans. There's a couple of ebay sellers selling off summer stock cheap if you do a search for either. You will need to know your friend's hat size though - an ill fitting hat won't make a great gift.

Stetsons are really very handsome hats, but way out of my price range. I'll look through ebay a bit more, good news is that I still have a little time left.

Are you referring to the Stetson or Dobb?

Stetson and Dobb are the same company just two different lines of hats. Dobb's have more "fashion" styles than Stetson both made in the same plant.
There should be sales on Milan hats right now as summer season is over in most of the US. If your friend has a small hat size you might be able to find a hat cheap on eBay but anything over a 7 1/4 will cost you as much as a Stetson or Dobb's if you want a decent looking hat.
