How does one wear a black fedora? The colour seems the most formal, so only with suits?

I think you're on the right track, if you're looking to be classic. There is quite a bit of precedent for them Werth tuxedos as well.

Anything where you'd wear black shoes. In the UK (and Europe) black hats have always been more common than brown.

His new charges from 1st September are 235 USD for rabbit or 300 for pure beaver +shipping. I think you can knock 50 dollars off those prices until the end of this month, but email him to confirm. No website but he'll happily email you photos of his work. Very much a part-time hatter, but his turnaround is pretty quick and does an excellent job. There are several happy customers over on TheFedoraLounge, and photos dotted around the place.

Curious to know what kind of fedora Eric Fassbender is wearing in X-men DOFP.

The brim is wide and flat, not a snap brim? I also think the pinch on the crown is interesting, so prominent that it's almost making a centre crease. I wonder what is the maker, I'd like to see more photos of this type of fedora.

There is no way to identiy a maker through a photo. You would need to see the sweatband for the particulars. Chances are it's custom made for the film and in that case the identity of its maker can be narrowed down to a half dozen or so of the usual suspects who supply films.

That said, there are a good number of competent hatters who could make a reasonable facsimile of the hat off of a few screen grabs.

It looks a lot like a campaign hat.
