When I bought my first hat, I was convinced, because of my relatively small stature and frame, that I would want/need a small brim. This was also during the apex of the stingy brim Fedora trend. (For the record, my desire for a fedora predated the trend, but means and opportunity did not accompany that motive for a few years.) none of the smaller brim hats worked, and I was beginning to think that, maybe, a had wasn't for me. I was quite dejected.
The hat was a Christmas gift from my mom, so she had taken me shopping. She pointed out that the cowboy hat of tried on for fun had actually looked really great. Therefore, she continued, a more classic, wider brimmed fedora might be just the ticket. I tried it on and she was absolutely right.
I'm really not sure what a rule of thumb might be, here, but there is certainly proportionality to the width of the face, and the width of the shoulders, at work.
