One of the nicest summer hats is the Akubra Capricorn/Bondi http://hatsdirect.com/cgi-bin/products.cgi?view=71&returncat=Straw+Hats&returnpage=0

Until I left/got mine stolen recently it was a top hat for the following reasons:

1. Cool ventilated in summer (Sydney got up to 44.5C this year in town!).
2. Rugged (hemp fibre)
3. Quality (leather band that is not sweaty).
4. Shape . Maintains its shape despite pulling on/off and summer carelessness.

I own/have owned 50s top Italian Milans but Graham's MTO Chinese Milan weave is pretty awesome

For those looking for a top rabbit Fedora I have one of these in Moonstone and its a superb hat:

I have a Milan from Art Fawcett, its one of my favorites, I'd like to get one of Optimo's one day.

Here are my Semi Colados, one by Art, one from Panama Bob blocked by Art

Lovely hats. How do you compare the brim flange and snap?

Beautiful but my issues with real Panamas is that the shape and firmness of the brim can so easily be wrecked by the smallest shower. I remember I wore one of Panama Bob's to a Melbourne Cup lunch and then a shower later that afternoon on the way home and that was it. Total re-flange job and never the same again.

Hence my preference for Milans with the stiffer straw component.

You guys buying boaters should tread carefully. Tough hat to pull off.

Ugh, he's got more problems than the boater.

Not too tough if you pair it up right. I wore mine with a linen jacket over the weekend won a prize for "best dressed". However, I don't intend it to be my only summer hat. It's more of a Concert in the Park/Forth of July/State Fair hat.

Also, a Goorin Bros shop just opened in my neighborhood. Why did you folks not tell me?

For those of you who have been in Brooks Brothers recently and seen the "Gatsby" straw boaters, for comparison, here is a Lock & Company Made In England straw boater (and original Brooks Brothers hatbox) that I got at Brooks Brothers in the late '60's.......

Yes, the boater is a hard hat to pull off. Photo #1 = good fit. Photo #2 = bad fit

Photo 2 guy has it right, you should always tilt your hat. Wear it like you own it!!

Photo 1 guy isn't pulling the boater off at all, the Panama guy, yes he is.

That's my point. Outside of "Concert in the Park/Forth of July/State Fair/My friends we got trouble; right here in River City" I can't think of a sillier hat.

Even inside those events it's costume. Great song, though.

Too lazy to post specific images but there a bunch of hat pages in my Advertorial blog for those interested.
I don't buy or sell so no spam issues here, but comments are welcome.
