i'm in the process of ordering a custom hat from the great Art Fawcett of Vintage Silhouettes. Trying to nail down crown height, brim width, and color. Any thought on which of my current collection look best?

In my opinion, I think you look best in a slightly tapered crown like the top left and top middle options. The bigger, more square crowns look slightly off with the way your face shape tapers from broad around the eyes and cheeks to a slightly narrower chin/jaw. The effect is subtle, not dramatic, but the crowns with more volume seem to compete with your face for attention somewhat, while the tapered crowns complement your face nicely.

Of those two, I think the slightly wider brim on the Borsalino sisal is best, but the crown shape is the real difference-maker here.

But this is really quibbling over small details - all of those hats look good on you.

Though I'm generally a fan of straight-sided, higher crowns, I agree. I think the Borsalino sisal has the best balance of crown and brim width for your face. But, I'd also suggest sending the pics along to Art and getting his input. He's very good at working with you to produce a great looking hat. You don't need to dictate crown height or brim width to the millimeter.

A hat shape (and color) that looks good on one person may not look good on yourself. That's why it's best to use a well stocked bricks and mortar hat store for your initial foray into the world of hats. Within a half hour you will know exactly what shapes and colors suit your face, physique and complexion best. Going forward, armed with that information, you can then use the remote transaction (Art Fawcett, Optimo, etc.) with much greater success. Anything less than that borders on a fools errand.
