Unfortunately for me, the vast majority of exhibitors were sneaker/casual shoes OEM makers from Japan, Taiwan, China, and Korea..... the only worthwhile booths for me were Kamioka (Taiwan) and Madras (Japan).

Wow G&G is commanding a huge premium in Japan!

Maybe I could fly to Tokyo just for the shoes, stay in capsule hotels to save on traveling cost for acquisition...

Regal Shoes in Hachioji are having a 30% off sale on Shetland Fox (their high end brand) Pity they don't have anything in my size (the dude actually sniggered) but some really nice shoes for cheap.

Yeah, 699K JPY, thats equivalent to 7000 USD or 4400 GBP.

Assuming the original price is 2800 GBP VAT free (443K JPY), that plus 30% import tax (on leather shoes), 5% VAT, travel fees, plus profit and administration fees for Hankyu Dept, should come out just right uhoh.gif

Holy shiet.  30% import tax on leather shoes?  How do those in Japan who outsourced to Indonesia survive?  $500 shoes retail, $250 wholesale, leaves $150 at distribution?  Very thin margins...

I think G&G charges £3,000 nowadays for oversea customers.

Yeah, the 30% (or more?) import tax on shoes are a killer, but like anywhere else, the customs in Japan don't always catch your shipment (if you're lucky). Or the overseas dealer can undervalue the product for you (obviously not may are willing).

Imports from developing countries do get special tax exemption. Shoes imported from LAOS (like Kamioka/Turnright), for example, are imported sans import tax.

NC, do you know if leather sneakers also get taxed? I'm thinking of ordering CPs (or the cheaper Kent Wangs), but I'd rather just wait and buy them abroad if I'll be taxed for them.

Thanks!

No need to stay in capsule hotels, Chogall.  There's plenty of businessman hotels with single room that are the same or cheaper than capsule hotels in Japan.

Some developing countries including Indonesia get a break on duties. The Indonesian gov also gives a break on duties on imported leather to manufacturers if they don't sell the goods in Indonesia.

Fortuna Shoes for example import leather from Europe to Indonesia tax free, they then manufacture Jalan Sriwijaya shoes (nice shoes) for export only, and get a break on duties to Japan.
