Please forgive if this is common knowledge, I did a search but nothing came up. 501xx printed in red instead of black. What does it signify in terms of date, fabric, etc.
Thanks.

Are they vintage or new? No 501s up to 1975 were printed in red ink.

Vintage I believe, the numbers a bit smaller than those from the 80s.

Thanks Brian. Yes, I've checked the same guide without luck. I'd assumed it would be an easy question to answer. Haven't examined the jeans but I may just buy them and take my chances.

If they're on eBay, be very careful. Loads of fake (well-done, but still fake) vintage Levi's have shown up there as of late.

werd. When I was at the Vegas Rockabilly weekender a few weeks back, one of the vendors had a stack of "deadstock LVC 1937 501xx bucklebacks, big E, selvage, etc" that had to be fakes. The leather patch didnt quite look right, and there was a stack of them in nearly all sizes, selling for $120. They looked like fine jeans in their own, but couldnt be real Levis.
