Outstanding.

Hey guys! Looking to pick up my first decent camera. Is the Nikon D3100 too outdated? I can get one second hand pretty cheaply. Stickshift those photos are crazy

The d3100 is great for the price, definitely not outdated IMO. Just get the refurbished one from adorama, and replace it with a better camera after a while if you decide to continue with photography.

The Smokies in Fall are awesome. Nice very nice.

Here's a rather rare phenomenon. This is either a Supralateral or 46 degree Sun Arc. I see these once or twice a year.

What bag is everyone using? I'm hoping to find something that I can carry my camera stuff and books since I go to class and shoot for my school paper, but I'm not sure such a thing exists.

He's also on a crop sensor, so if he's going to drop 400 dollars, he might as well get the 35mm, which is (generally) way more usable than a 50mm on a dx.

I ended up getting the 1.8, I love it.  It's not as cheap-feeling as I was expecting, either.

Bag? I have bags and hard cases. What I use depends on where and what I'm doing. LOL!

We are both in the same boat but our reasons are entirely different. You need to carry books and I need to carry multiple laptops. Some things I'm doing I now have to shoot tethered. So the only solution that I can come up with where I can get away with a single bag for this is to make my own modular system. For a bag I'm going to use a Filson backpack or a large Saddleback gadget bag. For the camera, flash and another lens you can go with something like Mountainsmith's kit cube or a Crumpler insert. Any other gear you might need you'll have to find appropriate cases for. Either one of my solutions will work for you but keep in mind these inserts can be used in just about any bag so keep that in mind.
