I'd be interested to know some of the creative ebay search strings that fora members use to unearth jewels in the rough. For instance, I find the following search helps find mislabeled RL Purple Label listings:

"ralph lauren" -"purple label" (italian, "made in italy", england, "made in england")
*searched in title and description

Anybody want to share their trade secrets?

If your a size isn't common just searching for that number can be really helpful. I've seen lots of interesting stuff in the Vintage section, that may be an option for you if you don't fear used items.

Here's an "Ebay trade secret"!

Look for misspellings via "Fat Fingers"

fat fingers

There are plenty of "Oxfords", and "Zengas", if you have the time to search for them.

Breoni, Borelli, Atolini, etc.

Give it a try.

Here's an "Ermenegildo Zenga" shirt that's currently going for $.01!!!

Zenga Shirt!

That's what I usually do for sport coats and suits. Unfortunately, not a lot of good 48L out there :)

My shoe search is probably my most complicated, these are the features eBay could add to make it better:
  • Remove query length restriction
  • Add metadata on width (I'm talking about you, Alden!)
  • Teach sellers that monkstraps are not loafers and dress boots should be classified as "dress shoes"

I could split my query up to get all that to work, but I'm not desperate enough to bother. I still don't get how to pick up all the non-English listings you guys are always posting in B&S...

Here's a good one for size 9 shoes:

9 shoes -pink -red -crazy -green -rose -purple -mezlan -kenneth -nunn -pliner -dexter -bostonian -italian -aldo -polo -klein -tommy -skechers -lobb -madden -sebago -jones -yves -timberland -ecco -grenson -paul -tramezza -vass -bally -timberland

That will cut way down on the junk you have to sort through.

In a similar vein, one of the things I hate is that their suit/sport coat size stops at 38. Anything below 38 gets into the 37 and smaller group.
Their vintage search categories are stupid too. It's based off of era, but pretty much every era is flooded with non-vintage crap. A new shirt with a picture of Keith Richards on it isn't "vintage" just because Keith is an old man.
What ebay should do is give Google a few billion dollars to make searching actually work on ebay, what they have going on now is a joke.

You're a size 9 I'm guessing?

Um, no. There are too many of us who want the same things, and the only way any parity is achieved for any of us is through the disparate quirks of our search routines. Disclosure is bad for all.
