Loafers / Driving Shoes with shorts? Cast your vote?

I've always seen this as a tricky combo.

What works and what doesn't???
Does suede make it better?

1. Do you do this?
2. If so, What combo can pull it off if at all?
3. Desribe loafer style, material etc.
4. or finally, just blast the whole idea as WRONG!

I found this below from a website and I thought it was funny:

Let's get something straight. Wearing loafers with no socks AND shorts is WRONG. IT'S OFFENSIVE.

Just who the hell do you think you are? You can't just casually strut around with those worn out bacteria factories on your feet and the daisy dukes and think that's OK. You're probably married, over 35 and therefore have lost all sense of style, but it's no excuse.

I bet this type of person even has the "nice loafers" and the "garden/outdoor grilling loafers". You SO deserve to die it's not even funny.

If I see you, I'm going to give you a major beat down, then laugh at your kids and call them ugly to their little crying faces.

Also, you may get an even BIGGER beat down if the following conditions are met:

- your loafers have tassles on them

- your shirt is tucked in

- your wife refers to you as her "hubby"

I don't do either. Just always reminds me of the middle aged boomer at Home Depot with the college sweatshirt, pleated shorts and weejuns with no socks.

If I find myself wearing shorts away from the house (which I very rarely do, even in Atlanta in the summer), I stick with a sandal or in extreme cases, New Balance with socks (no, not tube socks, the short ones). Call me odd, but I have always had an aversion to wearing shorts in public other than when I am running.

I second the BIGGER beat down for the tassels, must it be doubled for the kiltie loafers with tassels?

It can totally be done.....but socks are strictly verboten.

Seeing men wearing shorts with loafers and no socks disgusts me.

Driving mocs are a maybe if you don't have huge calves. I don't think loafers work with shorts at all.

Whenever I wear shorts, I wear sneakers or flip flops but I think it could be done with driving mocs, no socks.

I wear driving shoes with shorts all the time.

I think it looks great, the more casual the loafer the better although I think suede can look a little off.

No socks unless you are going for the comedy look.

I might (stress on MIGHT) do penny loafers with shorts (depending on the shape of the loafer - the RLPL barksdale would look ridiculous, for example). Definitely no socks. I often do driving loafers, camp mocs, or boat shoes, again, without socks.

I hate shorts

I don't get loafers or shorts. The idea of putting them together sounds bad.

Driving mocs and a pair of khaki/white pleated shorts is marvelous in the summer.
I just can't wait...

Brown bass loafers, sockless and pleated kakhi shorts used to be my go-to outfit for summer. Worn with everything from a T shirt to short sleeve button down and beyond. This to the point that I have replaced the shoes three times (cheaper than replacing the soles, the outlets always have them.

In the past year, however, I just can't bring myself to do it. (Setting aside weather concerns as I have been in worm climates.) Having nothing to do with this forum I just don't feel comfortable in the loafers anymore. Now I defer to birkenstocks or reefs, anwhere that I can't get away with those requires long pants (with which I will go socklesss w/loafers.)

Very difficult to pull off - I only have one pair of loafers I wear with shorts, a tan Paul Smith loafer with kind of a rounded square toe and a funky design embedded on the instep.

It might work with plain driving mocs too, but I think it would look ridiculous with any bit loafers, tassled loafers, or any loafer that looks overly formal.

No socks of course.
