These responses from pros in the industry suggest that chambray and voile are at least close cousins, if not variations of the same thing.

I think part of the confusion stems from the fact that many voiles appear to be woven as chambrays i.e. with a white weft.  The voiles from SG appear to be also chambrays.  Acorn also describe some of their voiles as chambrays i.e. "Chambray – a light-weight, plain weave cotton fabric having a coloured warp and a white weft, producing a mottled appearance. Our version of this is produced using a white warp and a coloured weft which enables smaller minimum productions – e.g. Zephyr"

By the way i agree with you that terminology is often used inconsistently and that professionals can often mislead the consumer.  If I had a pound for every time I've been told "they don't make canvassed suits anymore" I'd have enough for another suit.

Dieworkwear has a new article on chambraygate (I wish I had thought of this term) as well as some cheap, good-looking oxford cloth:

http://dieworkwear.com/post/49442082181/oxford-and-chambray

In it, he links to another site that seems to claim that all SG fabrics have polyester:

http://www.the-journal-of-style.com/2013/05/01/chambray-gate/

I say "all" only because SG seems to refer to everything they make as "chambray."

I just ordered 3 button down shirts from my HK shirtmaker in the following 'chambray'. It's definitely not the SG.

You should have included a matchstick in that picture. For scale, obviously.

P&B's chambray:

Really like the look of that - would make a great casual shirt.

How about the feel? Is it pretty thick / stiff?

This is an interesting read. For those too lazy to click, it says, among other things, "However, I am not comfortable with the situation and the fact that I have been selling a blend fabric that I thought was a 100 percent cotton fabric. I prefer to run a trustworthy blog and web store. So, I have decided to discontinue selling the chambray. The last meters I will sell at 250 DKK for two meters, which is less than half price of the usual 575 DKK."

The link to the fabric they are selling appears to be the same picture from here:
