White Ressentiment, the Poster Child - Page 4

I think its a problem because the quota seems to exist for no other reason than those schools wanting to limit a particular ethnicity on campus.

My contention is that its not all about the test scores. If you took these admissions officers' criteria for a rounded candidate, and evaluated a group of applications with racial markers removed, you would get a very different ratio of asian-to-white than is found on Ivy campuses. Even after controlling for athletics and legacies.

The only justification for that regime is exactly what you describe above- an overly yellow campus doesnt fit with a certain notion of prestige.

But the administrations would never admit this. They fall back on the insulting notion that asians as a group are deficient in the valued non-sat-related qualities.

I get a laugh just thinking about the mental contortions and rationalizing that must be going on in the heads of these administrators. Progressives has been running these schools for 40 years, but I dont see any difference between this and ye ole jew quota.

LOL, white girl thinks she's worked hard and submits her 1180 as "proof."

Asian parents across the nation facepalm.

This. It boggles my mind to see a "liberal" like NorCal defending a system that caps the numbers of a racial minority at a school.

According to google that's about the 75th percentile among college-bound kids. Nothing to scoff at.

The Asian-American average score is apparently about 1115.

I scoff at it, and at the lazy Southeasters who are pulling the average down.

People in the South don't even take the SAT--or, well, at least not the part I'm from.
I wasn't talking about the Southeast you think I'm talking about.

I thought you were talking about a wind. But that might be a fair point. Says Wikipedia:
Quote:
The largest ethnic groups represented in the census were Chinese (3.79 million), Filipino (3.41 million), Indian (3.18 million), Vietnamese (1.73 million), Korean (1.7 million), and Japanese (1.3 million).[16] Other sizable ethnic groups include Pakistani (409,000), Cambodian (276,000), Hmong (260,000), Thai (237,000), Laotian (232,000), Taiwanese (230,000), Bangladeshi (147,000), and Burmese (100,000)

I read this whole thread, and all I could think of was the King of the Hill episode where the Asian neighbor's daughter is rejected from a prestigious summer academic program because she's an Asian overachiever from a stable, intellectually-nurturing family. Her parents end up giving up on their stereotypically Asian ambition and turning into white (er...yellow?) trash rednecks, which ultimately gives the daughter the hardscrabble back story she needs to get into another, more prestigious program.

I love that episode. One of the best. Plus, it had Drive-By Truckers covering my favorite Tom Petty song.

I always have to remind myself that I took the test before the scores were recentered. 1180 when I was in high school meant community college or, even worse, Stephen F. Austin. peepwall[1].gif

Probably a stupid question but whatevs: why did the US invent the SAT and put so much weight into it for university admissions?

^ It was, to my knowledge, originally an attempt at egalitarian admissions policies--a test that most could take rather than legacies & connections. I think (would need to double check) a key player was James Conant at Harvard.

Because we have the finest and most prestigious universities in the world, bar none, no matter what people from McGill might think.

That's ironic.
