FW13: MISMO Bags and Accessories

MISMO: Great quality and classic styles from Denmark

Ten years ago men had few options for excellent leather bags, but thankfully these days it's possible to find a wide range of designers looking to make excellent products for a variety of aesthetic tastes. I’ve tried to feature some of those over the past few months, and one of my favorites was the Danish maker MISMO.

While a brand like Daniel & Bob features a soft, relaxed Italian feel, and WANT Les Essentiels a more structured, minimal design, Mismo features a classic style highlighted by great use of canvas and the functional aesthetic associated with Danish design. I spoke to Adam Bach, CEO and designer of the brand, in Florence and had a chance to check out the upcoming FW13 collection in person.

What I like: The collections are functional, built to last, and without any superfluous details or unnecessary elements. While I wouldn't call it a minimal style like Jil Sander or Valextra, nevertheless it's pared down to basics in a very aesthetically pleasing way.

In addition to the bags, I was impressed with Adam’s extensive knowledge of fabrics and leathers, not just for his own bags, but in general: he's put a great deal of time and research to know why a certain weight of fabric or treatment of leather will or won’t age or move in a certain way, and why each and every piece of his bags are what they are. Like WANT Les Essentiels (discussed last week), this extensive knowledge of product is surprisingly rare in a market saturated by seasonally-oriented “designers," and gives a buyer confidence that his money is being given to someone who knows what he or she is doing.

For FW13, Adam continues to offer his collections in the striped and solid canvas that has become a Mismo staple. He’s also added to his full-leather collection with a range of vegetable-tanned business bags and smaller leather goods (wallets, computer covers, etc.) All are well made with high quality materials and hardware. But, best of all, the brand has a very high quality-to-price ratio, ranging from $400-500 for canvas up to $1000 for full leather.

Bmca, the pictures came from ones the SF team snapped at the Pitti Uomo show in Florence in January. MISMO had a booth there of its collections we were able to review.

Just purchased a bag straight from Alex since the stockists were all sold out of the colour way I wanted. Really pleasurable to deal with. Can wait to get it next week.

Barney's had their all leather duffel (Hercules) on sale a few months ago. Not sure if they still make that model but I can confirm the quality was incredible.

Can anyone comment on the "beluga" colour? I can't really tell from pictures if it's brown or olive or grey.
