Any thoughts on this Polo tuxedo: http://www.polo.com/product/index.js...766205.2192508

I would like a trim tuxedo with relatively narrow shoulders and have found the Brooks Brothers tuxedos to be a little bit too boxy. Would this Polo tuxedo fit the way I want? I'd be using the 30% off discount code so it'd be around $900. Any suggestions?

Don't do it. Notched lapels are a no-no in my book. You want to look for one with peaked lapels.

Technically, zjpj83 may be right*, but only a fraction of a fraction would even notice. And a fraction of a fraction would even care. I think that last fraction is something like 500 or 600 people in the world. At least 300 of them are on this board.

That being said, I would get the peaked lapel anyway. It's a slightly sharper look. Which is to say, get the peaked lapels for substantive reasons (better look), not musty, formalistic reasons (because its the "rules").

*Previous posts have pointed out that there is plenty of historical evidence for notched lapels in dinner jackets.

The first time I wore my tux (a peak lapel, SB 1934, HS&M) I felt like a million dollars, and I was the only one in PL SB. That did have something to do with it.

The line of the peak maintains a certain elegant agrresiveness which I find subtly enthralling -- if you have ever watched the West Wing, whenever there is a black tie affair, Leo always looks best in his PL SB, and he is not the best looking guy on the show.

I appreciate all the responses. I agree that a SB peak lapel looks nicer but am having a hard time finding one in a slim cut in the $500 - $800 price range. I need it for my wedding in July. I live in Columbus OH and have limited choices here. Any suggestions on where to find one?

I know you probably want a new tuxedo, but I did pick up a very nice T&A DJ from a forum member for well under your budget. I'm not sure how much they run retail, but it is a very nice SB PL DJ.

I bought a RL tuxedo and wore it 2-3 times. The fabric has now piled in certain areas. I generally like the blue label and certainly the purple label, but for some reason the material used to construct my tuxedo was sub par. For the record, I didn't do anything unusual to cause such wear.

I would be careful in purchasing a tuxedo from RL if you expect it to last. Although I can "get away" with wearing mine, I'm certainly in the market for a better make.

It looks like I'm going to stay away from the Polo tuxedo. Does anyone have any experience with Hickey Freeman tuxedos? If one (SB, PL) could be had for significantly less than the $1500 retail price, would it be a good buy and would it fit my slim fit criteria?

Yeah, the Hickey are probably good - they are canvased.

FWIW, my dad has a Polo blue label DB tuxedo and likes it a lot.

You may check out the outlets in Aurora, OH, though I know that's a couple hours from where you live. May be worth a trip though.

Hmmm... not to disappoint you, but just as warning, Hickey Freeman dinner jackets, even the Madison cut, are not what I would consider "slim". They are well made, however. If it fits reasonably through the shoulders and chest, you can always get the body taken in.
