How to ask for a raise?

Just curious how other folks do it. I've been at my job for a year now and just recently found out that I could have received a higher starting salary but was lowballed by a now-retired director. My boss is probably open to the idea but to be honest I've never been in a position to ask for a salary increase before. Also, is asking via email poor form?

I don't know the dynamics of your company, but I would strongly recommend asking in person rather than by email.

ask in person. set up a meeting and let your boss have an idea of what the meeting will be about so he isn't blindsided (and is more prepared with a realistic answer).

i think your case sounds quite easy - if your salary is lower than your peers or lower than the guideline you can ask for an adjustment. it's a reasonable request as long as your performance is good. also, since it isn't your boss's "fault" you got lowballed, he won't be defensive or feel the need to save face

be prepared though for him not to be able to do the raise right away. many companies can only revisit salaries and make adjustments once a year (at the end during raise/bonus decision time)

Definitely don't do it via email. Usually easiest to do it during a performance review of some sorts. Don't you have quarterly or bi-annual meetings with your supervisor to discuss performance?

I figured asking via email wasn't the best option.

 

We have yearly performance reviews, but oddly mine comes up right after my contract is renewed on April 1st. I've already been told the contract will be renewed, but at this point it's for the same salary as the current contract.

In that case, you should support your argument with your last performance review. Unless it sucked, in which case you should shuck and jive.

When you have a meeting, grab your manager/director and let them know if you can speak to them momentarily about your position there. When you meet with them just let them know how you've been working and what you've done to warrant a raise. If yu.ou deserve a raise, I don't see how they could deny you.

 

-asked for a few raises in my time.

 

Its better to get it over with because as time goes by, you look back and realize you could've made XXXX more.
