Waxing/oiling suede?

Does anyone here know how to do this properly? I assume it's at least fairly different from waxing fabric, but I don't really have any idea on specifics. I need to wax or oil a pair of desert boots, hopefully making them look pretty cool in the process.

I have tried this thing Not sure you get what you want, look at my boots now:

What do you expect/want them to end up looking like? What do they look like now?

They look like normal desert boots, only with a big water stain on the right shoe because someone dropped snow on them, which I appreciated. Basically, I've seen waxed leathers, so I'm thinking of that or maybe something similar to some of the distressed boots that have been posted recently (Carpe Diem, etc).

Hmm. Right. The only way I really know of to do waxing of suede is Sno Seal. That could actually work, maybe. Maybe sno-seal then buffing the toe and quarters to get that distressed thing, if you want that.

Next time I'm in a thrift shop maybe I'll try to pick up a pair of suede shoes to mess with - there are always a couple.

Hm. That does sound promising, though I've never used Sno Seal, so I'm a little uncertain. If you get a chance to try it out soon, post it; I'm really curious.

An intriguing thought;
please post pics so we may judge
the results of this.

Sno Seal is easy, you just smoosh it all over the leather and then put the boots in the oven on like 200 degrees or so to get it to melt and soak in. The instructions are on the jar and it's like 6-8 bucks last time I checked.

I need to know this too...

interesting. in theory this could could also be used to weatherproof the soles as well, or would that be retarded?

i did this to my clarks desert boots. just threw a layer of sno seal on my dirty sand suedes ... but i never threw them into the oven. they are good at repelling water but not water proof

The defining aspect of suede is its nap/fuzziness, and waxing or otherwise waterproofing it will likely hide if not destroy this feature. As long as you are okay with an end result along the lines of "waxed/coated leather," have at it.

I think you should buy another boot to get the look you are desiring. I never understood why someone would mess with suede.

The process of dubbing is one of the reasons why suede is so versatile, I believe. I like to use beeswax, or a beeswax/animal oil mixture to do this.

+1.... suede protector spray, sure. But using boot oil destroys the suede.
