A few days ago I ordered a "martini, up with a twist" an received a small wineglass of warm vermouth with a single ice cube and the peel from what must have been an entire lemon. Baffling.

Wat. What kind of vermouth did they use?

I'm guessing it was "martini and rossi"

Was this outside the US by any chance?

Yup, the uk. Is there something I should know?

Honestly sounds like some shit you'd get at a college bar that is trying to masquerade as a cocktail bar. There's a couple pretty solid cocktail bars in town, but I wouldn't trust any of the campus bars to anything more than a Long Island or a Black Velvet.

Well, that's still a little weird for the U.K. but from what I've heard, it's not unusual to get a big glass of vermouth when you order a martini in countries without a large cocktail culture. In Italy, for example, Martini & Rossi Bianco is one of the most popular "happy hour" drinks (as it should be, that stuff is freakin delicious).

Yeah, always remember to explicitly say "martini COCKTAIL" in italy -- in most places they would just puor some vermouth otherwise.

Tried to order a "Vesper" Martini the other day. Bartender had no clue what I was on about. So I broke it down, wanting earnestly to try Fleming's intriguing concoction. He didn't even know what Lillet was. NYC I AM DISAPPOINT. And it was a decent establishment too (or so I thought). Sidenote: I much prefer Bombay and Tanqueray to Gordons, it's just so flat and unremarkable - makes for a decidedly meh martini, though I do like it in a Gin and Tonic for some reason. Any thoughts on a good new gin to try? I've been on a martini and gin kick lately

Hendricks and Plymouth are two brands that are pretty good and commonly found. I've been told, but haven't conducted enough research to say definitively that Hendricks goes well with a cucumber martini.

Hendricks and tonic with cucumber is probably my go-to gin drink.

About to go drink bottles of champagne on the roof with my housemates to celebrate the end of UG and the beginning of summer, should be a fun night icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif

Also, boxed wine for days. Not even sorry

Ah, college drinking. IIRC this was the result of junior -> senior year summer. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. And yes, that is fire damage that I didn't bother to re-paint. Probably could've spent less on booze and more on jawnz (if I had known about them).
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

I'll cosign the previous Hendricks and Plymouth recommendations and add a tip of the hat to Martin Miller gin, especially the Westbourne Strength version.

Had a great Vesper in the Atlanta airport recently. They used No 3 and Tito's.
