You're joking right? I moved from my top of the line renovated elevator apartment in the marina with a view of the golden gate to manhattan two years ago and pay over 3x more in rent. $6500/month for a fifth floor walk up with rodents, and paid the routine 15% annual rent brokers fee (which doesn't even exist in sf). Sf rent may be high, but working on the side in real estate, it is a fraction of manhattan pricing. I'm currently in Chelsea London (with a great renovated apartment with a massive private garden) subleasing my mouse infested one bedroom that often lacks heat and hot water in NYC, making a killing as no where in the world has rent remotely comparable to manhattan.
