Vacation Recommendations (US)?

I'm looking at going on a trip with the lady friend this summer, and we're looking to make one leg of the trip in a more outdoor setting (but not a camping trip). There are the obvious places (Yosemite, Sierras, Redwood National Park, Grand Canyon, etc.) but those are full of tourists.

I know the peoples of SF are well-traveled, so I was wondering if there were any recommendations for less-traveled places. Continental U.S. only.

Thanks in advance!

edit: adding the following

Thinking about it more, another option that I'm pretty interested in would be a remote lodge/resort. This opens it up from being purely 'nature' travel destinations, so if anybody has some suggestions here, I'm all ears.

This place actually looks really cool. The only problem may be the timing: Is there a reason you recommend late July/August?

The weather cannot be assumed agreeable until mid july at the earliest. Every few years it starts to get nice in late June in the Seattle area, but I cannot count how many rainy 4th of July's I've had. I assumed you would be interested in visiting Seattle and some other surrounding areas in addition to the park.

there are any # of nice 'resort' type ranches/lodges in either the rocky mtn west (e.g triple creek in momtana), or east coast (migis in maine or the point &/or lake placid lodge in the adirondacks)

I was going to mention Maine and the islands also- but out west there's also coastal Oregon- usually not too touristy and beautiful.

Damn. This puts a damper in visiting it this year, at least. Putting it on the long-term list.

Both those places look awesome. Do you have any experience with things a bit further south on the east coast? Near VA or Delaware? I've found a few places on Google, but word-of-mouth > random shit you f ind on the internet.

Out of curiosity, what else is on your list?
