Good Deals on Lenses for Glasses in NYC

I feel like every time I need a new prescription for glasses I end up paying $600. I always use my same frames, so that isn't an issue, but there has got to be better deals out there. Even with insurance it comes out to an outrageous amount of money. Honestly, I think eyeglass insurance is some sort of scam, but that is besides the point. Any New Yorkers know of a place where you at least don't feel ripped off? Thanks guys.

If you prefer dealing only with brick and mortar store, I can't help you.

Should you be willing to entertain online operations that replace lens (of significant better quality at much less price point), I may be able to offer some suggestions

How would that even be done, if I want to keep my frames?

It's especially easy if you are keeping a pair of frames that you know fits you well.

What you need is the actual prescription (or the actual prescription numbers for your eyes), the measurement for the PD (pupillary distance). You then send that to the online operation. You then pick the exact lens you want (there are many many options: how thin, what kind of coating...etc).

On average you can expect to save around 40%, at least, just for the lens themselves.

I've had good experience with this outfit out of Texas

Yes, but how the hell do they cut them to match my frames if they don't have my frames???

Sorry if I was not clear before.

You have to send the frames to them to be fitted for new lens.
I have had turn around time of 5 days by paying for expedited service.

You do have more than one frame, right?

Nope, one pair.

If its just lenses, you can go to any Lenscrafters/Pearle Vision type place and get them to replicate the current lenses prescription and you'll be out maybe $150. They'll put them on your frames while you wait. I used to do this all the time when I was buying frames online. Recently, I just went to the warby parker in the meat packing district and got these, all in, for $90.

In terms of eye insurance, its not as comprehensive as medical but I pay like $7 a month and my wife gets new prescription glasses every year from the usual high end designer suspects and we pay like $250 for stuff that the stores retail in the $500 range. Maybe look into a different insurance provider.

That's crazy and the opposite of my experience. $150 would be amazing. Do you get all of the fancy coatings, or is that all bullshit?

Derision was in order, but I will just point out that you are a supposed SENIOR member on Styleforum.

And glasses are definitely considered part of one's style.

I don't see your point. My one pair of frames is a part of my style, so iconic, in fact it is the only pair I wear.

I have to disagree with Ed.

And I'm frankly surprised that more thought about quality of frames/glasses are missing here. Especially when so much attention is paid to the likes of suit, shoes...etc.

I have low opinions of LensCrafters & Pearles vision.

Cheap, fast, good. Pick two

I never knew there was a difference between where you got lenses. Educate us. Especially since you recommend a "value" online vendor.

This thread isn't about stylish frames, there are threads for that. This is about where to get lenses.

What is your contingency plan for the time when your one pair of frames is damaged?

Why not have at least two pairs of the same style (or exact same frames)?

Full disclosure: I myself have 10 pairs of frames, not including sunglasses. There are two additional pairs arriving any day also.
